Professional Cryotherapy with Liquid Nitrogen
Fast, effective wart removal using medical-grade liquid nitrogen at our clinic in Vaasa.
What Are Warts?
Warts are benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear anywhere on the body but are most common on hands, feet, and fingers. While harmless, warts can be unsightly, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful — especially plantar warts on the soles of your feet.
About 10% of the general population has warts, and 10–20% of children and teenagers are affected. The virus spreads through direct skin contact or contaminated surfaces, particularly in warm, moist environments like swimming pools, saunas, and shared showers.
Types of Warts
Common Warts (Verruca vulgaris)
Rough, raised bumps typically found on hands and fingers. Often have a cauliflower-like surface with tiny dark dots (blood vessels).
Plantar Warts (Verruca plantaris)
Flat or inward-growing warts on the soles of the feet. Can be painful when walking, as body weight pushes them into the skin.
Flat Warts (Verruca plana)
Smooth, flat-topped warts that often appear in clusters on the face, neck, or legs. Smaller and smoother than other types.
Periungual Warts
Warts around or under fingernails and toenails. Can affect nail growth and be particularly stubborn to treat.
Cryotherapy – Professional Wart Freezing
Our cryotherapy treatment uses medical-grade liquid nitrogen at –196°C to freeze and destroy wart tissue. This is the gold standard treatment used by dermatologists worldwide and is far more effective than over-the-counter freezing products (which only reach –57°C).
The treatment process:
- The wart and surrounding area are examined and prepared
- Liquid nitrogen is applied directly to the wart using a precision spray or applicator
- The extreme cold destroys the wart cells and triggers your immune system to fight the HPV virus
- Treatment takes only 10–20 seconds per wart
What to expect:
- • Brief stinging sensation during application (most people rate it 3–4 out of 10)
- • Mild swelling and redness for 1–2 hours after
- • A blister may form within 24–48 hours — this is normal and part of the healing process
- • The treated area darkens, forms a scab, and falls off within 1–2 weeks
- • New, healthy skin appears underneath
Treatment Plan
Most warts require 2–4 treatment sessions, spaced 3–4 weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on the size, location, and type of wart. Plantar warts and larger warts typically need more sessions.
Cryotherapy has a success rate of 50–70% after 3–4 treatments, making it one of the most effective non-surgical wart removal methods available.
Self-Care & Prevention Tips
Preventing warts from spreading
- Don’t touch, pick, or scratch your warts — the virus spreads easily to other areas
- Wash your hands thoroughly after touching a wart
- Don’t bite your nails or cuticles if you have warts on your fingers
- Keep warts covered with a bandage if they’re in areas that get touched frequently
- Don’t share towels, socks, shoes, or nail clippers with others
- Use separate pumice stones or files for wart areas — don’t use them on healthy skin
Protecting yourself from HPV
- Wear sandals or flip-flops in public pools, saunas, gym showers, and changing rooms
- Keep your feet clean and dry — change socks daily (more often if feet sweat)
- Don’t walk barefoot in public areas
- Avoid direct contact with other people’s warts
- Strengthen your immune system — adequate sleep, balanced diet, and regular exercise help your body fight HPV
Home care for existing warts
- Keep the wart clean and dry
- Apply salicylic acid products (available at pharmacies) as directed — soak the wart first for better absorption
- Cover with a bandage after applying treatment
- Be patient — home treatments can take weeks to months to work
- If home treatment isn’t working after 4–6 weeks, it’s time for professional cryotherapy
Important: When NOT to self-treat
- If you have diabetes or poor circulation
- If the growth is on your face or genitals
- If you’re not sure it’s actually a wart
- If the wart is bleeding, infected, or very painful
- If you’re immunocompromised
Post-Treatment Care Guide
Immediately after cryotherapy
- The treated area will be red and may sting for 15–30 minutes — this is completely normal
- Apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or Aquaphor to the treated area
- Cover with a clean bandage
- You can take over-the-counter pain relief (ibuprofen or paracetamol) if needed
Days 1–3: Blister formation phase
- A blister will likely form — this is a GOOD sign that the treatment is working
- Do NOT pop, drain, or peel the blister
- Keep the area clean — wash gently with mild soap and water
- Apply petroleum jelly and keep covered with a bandage
- Change bandage daily or when it gets wet or dirty
- The blister fluid may be clear, pink, or blood-tinged — all normal
Days 3–7: Healing phase
- The blister will start to dry and form a dark scab
- Continue keeping the area clean and moisturized
- Don’t pick at or pull off the scab — let it fall off naturally
- You can shower normally but avoid soaking the area (no baths, swimming pools, or saunas)
- If the wart is on your foot, cushioned pads can help with comfort while walking
Days 7–14: Recovery phase
- The scab falls off, revealing new pink skin underneath
- The area may be slightly tender and lighter in color than surrounding skin
- Continue moisturizing the area
- Skin color will gradually return to normal over a few months
- If the wart is still visible after healing, don’t worry — a follow-up treatment is normal

- Increasing pain, redness, or swelling after the first 48 hours

Between treatment sessions
- Keep your follow-up appointment (usually 3–4 weeks after treatment)
