Electrolysis – Permanent Hair Removal

The Only FDA-Approved Method for True Permanent Hair Removal

Effective on all hair colors and all skin types. Proven results since 1875.

What Is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal that is FDA-approved as truly permanent. A tiny, sterile probe is inserted into the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft — not into the skin tissue itself — and a precise electric current is delivered to destroy the growth cells at the root of the follicle. Once destroyed, the follicle can no longer produce hair.

Electrolysis has been used safely and effectively for over 140 years, since its first documented use in 1875 by ophthalmologist Dr. Charles Michel. Unlike laser hair removal, which works best on dark hair against light skin, electrolysis is effective on all hair colors — including blonde, white, red, and grey — and all skin types.

How Does Electrolysis Work?

Each hair is treated individually. A fine, sterile probe is gently inserted into the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft, and an electric current destroys the growth cells. There are three main methods:

Galvanic Electrolysis

The original method, using direct current to create a chemical reaction (sodium hydroxide) inside the follicle that destroys the growth cells. It is thorough and effective, though slower than other methods.

Thermolysis (Short-Wave)

Uses high-frequency alternating current to generate heat directly in the follicle, destroying the growth cells. This is the fastest method and is ideal for treating larger numbers of hairs per session.

Blend Method

Combines galvanic and thermolysis techniques for maximum effectiveness. The heat accelerates the chemical reaction, making it the most thorough method — particularly effective for coarse or stubborn hairs.

Electrolysis vs. Laser Hair Removal

Electrolysis Laser Hair Removal
Result Permanent removal (FDA-approved) Permanent reduction
Hair Colors All colors including blonde, white, red, grey Works best on dark hair
Skin Types All skin types Best results on lighter skin
Treatment Individual hairs, one at a time Large areas at once
Speed Slower per session Faster per session
Best For Small areas, detail work, light/fine hairs Large areas, dark hair on light skin

Best approach: Many clients achieve optimal results by using laser first for bulk hair reduction on larger areas, then finishing with electrolysis for any remaining stubborn, fine, or light-colored hairs that laser cannot treat.

Treatment Areas

Face

  • • Upper lip
  • • Chin
  • • Eyebrows
  • • Sideburns
  • • Neck

Body

  • • Underarms
  • • Bikini area
  • • Fingers and toes
  • • Areola
  • • Other small areas

Electrolysis is best suited for smaller areas or detail work. For larger areas such as legs or back, consider starting with laser hair removal first, then using electrolysis for any remaining hairs.

What to Expect

During treatment, you will feel a slight pinch or sting as each hair is treated — most clients describe it as very tolerable. The sensation varies depending on the treatment area and your individual sensitivity.

Mild redness in the treated area is normal and typically subsides within a few hours. Each session lasts 15–60 minutes depending on the area being treated and the number of hairs.

Multiple sessions are required because hair grows in cycles. Each follicle can only be effectively treated during its active growth phase (anagen). Since only a portion of hairs are in the growth phase at any given time, several sessions spaced weeks apart are needed to treat all follicles.

Before Your Treatment

  • Do not tweeze or wax for at least 2–3 weeks before your appointment — the hair must be visible in the follicle for treatment
  • Shaving is OK — shaving does not affect the follicle and can be done up to 1–2 days before
  • Clean skin — arrive with clean skin free of lotions, makeup, or sunscreen on the treatment area
  • Avoid caffeine before your session — it can increase skin sensitivity
  • Stay hydrated — well-hydrated skin conducts the current more effectively

Aftercare

  • Apply soothing gel such as aloe vera to calm the treated area
  • Do not touch the treated area with unwashed hands
  • Avoid sun exposure on the treated area for 48 hours
  • No makeup on treated facial areas for 24 hours
  • Gentle cleansing only — avoid harsh scrubs or exfoliants for a few days
  • No swimming in pools, saunas, or hot tubs for 24–48 hours

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Electrolysis is the only hair removal method recognized by the FDA as truly permanent. Once a hair follicle has been successfully treated and destroyed, it cannot regrow hair. However, multiple sessions are needed because hair grows in cycles, and each follicle must be treated during its active growth phase.

The number of sessions varies depending on the treatment area, hair density, and individual hair growth cycles. Most areas require 8–18 sessions over 12–18 months. Smaller areas like the upper lip may need fewer sessions, while larger or denser areas may need more. Sessions are typically spaced 1–4 weeks apart.

Most clients describe the sensation as a brief pinch or slight sting. The level of discomfort varies by treatment area — more sensitive areas like the upper lip may feel more noticeable than less sensitive areas. Modern electrolysis devices are designed to minimize discomfort, and topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand if needed.

Yes. Unlike laser hair removal, which relies on the contrast between hair color and skin color, electrolysis works by targeting the individual follicle directly. This makes it safe and effective for all skin types and all skin tones, including very dark and very light skin.

Yes. This is one of the biggest advantages of electrolysis over laser. Laser relies on melanin (pigment) in the hair to absorb light energy, so it struggles with blonde, white, red, and grey hair. Electrolysis uses electric current delivered directly into the follicle, so hair color is completely irrelevant. It works equally well on all hair colors.

Electrolysis is the only FDA-approved permanent hair removal method, while laser is classified as permanent hair reduction. Electrolysis works on all hair colors and skin types; laser works best on dark hair and lighter skin. Laser treats large areas quickly, while electrolysis treats hairs individually. Many people use both: laser first to reduce bulk, then electrolysis for remaining fine or light hairs.
